How to Become a Commercial Pilot in India

What Is a Commercial Pilot License (CPL)?

The progression typically follows:

CPL is awarded after completing required exams, medical clearances, and 200 hours of flying.

Eligibility Criteria

To become a commercial pilot in India, you must:

  • Complete 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
  • Score at least 50% in these subjects
  • Be minimum 17 years for SPL and 18 years for CPL
  • Clear DGCA Class 2 and Class 1 medical examinations
  • Be proficient in English

Students from Arts or Commerce can qualify by completing Physics and Mathematics through NIOS.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Complete 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
  2. Clear DGCA Class 2 Medical
  3. Obtain DGCA Computer Number
  4. Join a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO)

  6. Complete 200 hours of flying (including solo, cross-country, night, instrument, and multi-engine flying)
  7. Pass the CPL skill test
  8. Apply for CPL through the eGCA portal

After CPL, most candidates add Multi-Engine Rating (MER), Instrument Rating (IR), and later complete Type Rating (A320 or B737) based on airline selection.
